What's the function of oxidized metal?

I'm considering buying a blade that would be more useful in the wilderness, and I came across one that is oxidized? I immediately start thinking that it's rusty or something, but that wouldn't make sense. Is this purely for the look, or is their actually a useful purpose in having a "Serrated Locking Oxidized Blade", as opposed to just a normal serrated locking blade?
